First, if you’re here, you probably know that getting any traffic ticket when you have a G2 licence is a problem. So there’s definitely not going to be any good news about getting a speeding ticket with a G2 licence.
With the goal of helping drivers develop good habits, penalties for novice drivers are more strictly enforced than for regular class G drivers. For example, while G drivers might not get a 30-day licence suspension for being convicted of driving 30 km/hr over the speed limit, depending on the circumstances, class G2 drivers will have their licences suspended for 30 days if convicted of the same offence.
And that’s just where the bad news starts.
How a Speeding Ticket With A G2 Licence Affects Insurance Rates
Insurance companies know that a good portion of their payouts result from the actions of inexperienced drivers. Needless to say, a G2 driver’s insurance rates will be dramatically affected due to a conviction on speeding charges.
Demerit Points
In addition to having their driver’s licence suspended for 30 days after a conviction of speeding over 30 km/hr or more over the limit, class G2 drivers will have their licence suspended for 30 days for a conviction on any traffic ticket, including those for offences like stunt driving, that results in 4 or more demerit points, or any accumulation of demerit points over 5. 6 demerit points results in a warning interview and 9 demerit points results in suspension (if accumulated over a 2-year period).
Fines & Other Penalties
Of course, as the severity of the offence goes up, so too do the penalties. While fines can result from any speeding conviction, they can go up to $10,000 for a conviction on a charge of driving 50 km/h over the limit. You may also have your vehicle seized for 7 days and face 100% insurance rate increases for the same conviction.
